Misconceptions of Fitness
Have you ever told yourself, “I’m going to get absolutely shredded this summer” and surprisingly it didn’t work or you ended up starving yourself to the point where you were eating nothing but kale and cashews?
What if I told you that the reason why you're not seeing the results you want for your body comes down to three simple reasons?
When it comes to fitness and creating a rocking physique, there seems to be only one way to do it. It goes something like this; bulk up in the winter, and shred down in the summer. Yeah logically this makes sense, but what if you could put on muscle and lose fat all year long.
Reason #1: Clarity
The first reason why people don't achieve their fitness goals is because they lack clarity. People like to say “I want to get shredded”. But what does this actually mean? Do you want a six pack? Do you want to lose 10 pounds? Do you want to gain fat and lose muscle?
If we don’t have a clear vision of what we want to look like, we will never be able to transform our bodies. With no clarity and no direction, it's hard to hold ourselves accountable for when we start that crazy new gym routine that we end up failing to continue just after one week.
As a typical college guy, I followed a basic protocol that went something like this...October-January was spent “dirty bulking” desperately trying to put on as much muscle as I could. Once February came around, it was time to cut fat aggressively. Unfortunately, with absolutely no sense of clarity, I ended up burning myself out doing hours of unnecessary cardio and before you knew it, I was actually gaining weight!
Reason #2: Motivation
The second reason why people don't achieve their physique goals is because they lose motivation. But before I tell you to keep watching videos of Arnold Schwarzenegger before you workout, how about SCREW MOTIVATION. Motivation is never there when you need it the most. The easy trick to keep yourself accountable is to set mini goals for yourself. A mini goal is essentially a very simple objective that you set for yourself. A fitness mini goal you could make for yourself to get stronger would be to go to the gym and do one set of bench press. The purpose of the mini goal is to set such an easily achievable objective that it becomes virtually impossible to fail. Not feeling like doing an hour of heavy lifting today? Fine, then just go to the gym and just do one set and you achieved your goal. What’s more likely to happen though is that once you do this one set, you're more likely to do more sets. And maybe instead of doing just bench press you'll hit some squats and then maybe some curls because now you're building momentum and according to science, objects that are in motion tend to stay in motion.
Reason #3: Nutrition
The third reason you aren’t achieving your fitness goals is because you don't understand your own nutritional needs. Nutrition can be a touchy subject, but to save you all time, everyone needs a balanced diet. I'm sure you've heard this from your parents and other adults but the truth is that there are many popular diets that emphasize cutting out certain types of foods. What most people don't realize is that our bodies need carbs, fats, proteins, micro-nutrients and proper hydration to optimize our system as a whole.
